The first of its kind in Canada, Valour Place offers a temporary home for ill and injured military members, RCMP members, veterans and their families, free of cost. To ensure it is free of cost for all visitors always, the facility is holding its third annual Walk for Valour on Sept. 11.

Valour Place, located in Edmonton, AB, offers a temporary home for ill and injured who are receiving treatment in Edmonton. The facility houses 12 private barrier-free bedrooms with private bathrooms, TV, internet, a kitchen, dining room and living room. Guests scan also find gaming and entertainment rooms at Valour Place.

Work in Valour Place started in 2010 thanks to Dennis Erker, the Honorary Colonel of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment. The facility was up and running in 2012.

“It’s a home away from home. Valour Place is the residence of choice for injured or ill Canadian Forces Members, RCMP, Veterans and their families. Through Valour Place, they have the means to face the challenges of rehabilitation in a warm, welcoming and supportive environment,” said Lydia Migus, Executive Director of Valour Place.

The walk on Sept. 11 will raise funds towards the Valour Place Family Endowment Fund to ensure the facility remains cost-free to its visitors. The walk starts off this year at RCMP Headquarters in Edmonton with a pancake breakfast, prepared and served by military members. Then participants have the option of walking three or five miles, ending at Valour Place. The walk will be followed by a luncheon and an assortment of activities including a visit by the Lord Strathcona’s Horses,

RCMP demonstrations, a visit by their mascot Monty the Bear and Dogs with Wings. The turnout ranges from 300 to 800 people and individuals of all ages come out to take part. “It’s just a fun day to spend with others and to raise money for a good cause,” commented Migus.

The walk also helps to create awareness in the community about Valour Place. “Everyone as a relative or friend who is a member/veteran of the military or RCMP, and you never know when they or their family may need to come to Edmonton for medical or emergency treatment and require a place to stay. Our participants all ranks – it is a great way to interact in a fun and social atmosphere,” stated Migus. Registration is $35 and is open until the day of the walk. Children under five are free. The pancake breakfast and registration begin at 8 a.m. followed by the walk at 10 a.m.click for the article
